Why Social Media Is Important In Business

6th August marks 29 years of people using the world wide web. How does that make you feel? Do you remember the sound of the dial up, waiting for the PC to connect to a world of information?

Rewind back to the days of creative thinking, when it came to screensavers of multicoloured WordArt, playing Minesweeper and kids trying to find as many nudes as possible. (Or was that just my male friends??)

Those days when IT lessons went from learning how to use the paperclip support character and became more about learning how to create ringtones on your Nokia 3310. Then of course, it was the land of chat rooms and MSN…is it all coming back to you now?

AOL and MSN really were the start of what we know as social media. We started conversations with ASL and formed trusting relationships with people all over the world. We also all had our first friend in the form a man sat in front of a whiteboard called Tom on Myspace.

Facebook changed the face of what social media looks like today. It became a way for people to catch up with old friends, current friends, long lost family and how many of us used the all familiar saying on a night out “I’ll add you on Facebook in the morning!”

The world of social media kept evolving and with the birth of Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Snapchat, Instagram and not to mention the latest addition – TikTok. It seemed like there was a social platform for anyone and everyone!

But it’s so much more than just chatting!!!

Businesses can use social media for networking, promotions, competitions, setting trends and reaching new markets. Marketing, especially in the digital form is vital for businesses to succeed and here is why:

  • Millennials continue to be the generation with the highest use of social media, and also the broadest access to smartphones. With their age group being the future consumers, keeping up with trends is highly recommended.
  • Brands are riding the wave of social media marketing. 73% of marketers believe that their efforts through social media marketing have been “somewhat effective” or “very effective” for their business (Buffer, 2019).
  • 71% of consumers who have had a positive experience with a brand on social media are likely to recommend the brand to their friends and family (Lyfemarketing, 2018). By interacting with customers through social media platforms you show them that you care.
  • Nearly 50% of the world’s population uses social media. That’s over 3 billion users worldwide (Statista).
  • 54% of social browsers use social media to research products.

So why not jump on the bandwagon and follow the direction that technology is heading?
