I remember when my sister had her first child, she was talking about what she was doing with him and how she would discipline him, allow him to do certain things, eat this and that and I remember being 19 and thinking “Pfft, I won’t do that with my kids….”
Fast forward 10 or so years and here I am with 3 boys, winging life and parenting – celebrating their unscathed survival for another day.
I started my business in 2018 after being made redundant; but when I was in full time work, I also had a parenting blog which helped me discover a passion for Pinterest. I found that it was an easy website for me, I uploaded Pins based on my blog posts and each Pin became a roaring success compared to how it performed on other social media platforms.
Then came the great crash in 2020ish and Pinterest changed….
(It was in the covid haze so all the months merged into one haha!)
No longer did I know what I was doing. No-one knew what they were doing!!! There was no rule book, no explanation of how to handle your accounts – let alone Client accounts! It was a case of trial and error, try a few strategies and hope for the best. Every time you started to get somewhere, another spanner in the works happened. Whether it be another update or a new feature being released, no matter what you did, you were always chasing your tail.
This is when it dawned on me…. It is just like when you’re a parent.
Every time you think you’ve grasped the parenting malarky there is something that makes your life go tits up. Whether it be a sleep regression, another weaning stage, teething… when you get comfortable and secure in your parenting skills.. WHAM… nope.. you can’t get too cosy!
When one thing has been working for ages, suddenly that comfort blanket isn’t what makes them stop crying, or that meal they’re guaranteed to eat without fuss becomes the most revolting thing ever! When you’re a parent, there are no instructions, no rule book and really, there really are no wrong or right ways.
It is the same with Pinterest. It really is a case of trial and error. Find what Pin images resonate with your ideal clients, discover what keywords your customers use. Remember that keywords change over time therefore you need to keep going back and doing more research. Keep an eye on what’s trending.. how can you use that to your advantage?
At the end of the day, both parenting and Pinterest really is more similar than you could imagine. You need to work with the results you’ve been given to date and manipulate them strategically to get the end goal that you want.
Sounds simple? Try raising twins!!!
(Disclaimer: I do not condone manipulating children – especially not with an aid of chocolate or screentime *wink*)
